Today at recess, I surprised the students with a kite. As I started to inflate the middle section and put it all together, students quickly gathered around me. “Mrs. Calendo, what is that?” The students were not sure what I had because it looked more like a blimp than a kite! They were all eager to help and soon we were ready to fly the kite, except an important piece was missing. We couldn’t find the string. We looked in the box, one student ran into the school building to see if it was in my office, and we checked the ground. What were we to do? Thankfully, Ms. Angie had an extra set of string in her classroom, so we hooked up our kite and were ready for our maiden voyage in the sky. It didn’t take long for us to realize that the string was NOT strong enough to hold this half kite, half blimp contraption! Many of the students started sharing ideas and suggestions. We tried so many different ways to keep our kite in the air, but mostly it broke away and crashed into the ground. If only our string was stronger! What about a shoelace? Quickly, one student started to take out her hot pink shoelaces to donate to our cause. We tied it up and sure enough, it worked perfectly. Yes, it was a short string. Yes, the kite did not go very high. Yet everyone who wanted a turn, got to fly our kite for a short time. One person’s unselfish gift of shoelaces made for a great afternoon of fun for her classmates. What do you have that if you gave it unselfishly and without hesitation could be a blessing to others? Jesus takes our small gifts and he blesses them so they SOAR higher then we can imagine.
