Decatur Christian School has a team of students in the high school level of robotics competition. The call their team the DCS MechWarriors. Nathan Weaks, Bryce Shew, Kaleb Reynolds, and Sam Frankovich are making their mark on the landscape of regional tech teams. Coached by DCS teacher Joe Braun, the team participated in their first scrimmage meet in Champaign, Illinois on November 10th. There were 5 matches with different objectives in the matches. The competition is part of First Tech Challenge, which is an organization formed to help students learn about designing, building, and programming robots.
A robotic kit with parts that can be reused year by year is the basic starting point for teams in FTC (First Tech Challenge). Challenges are declared by FTC each year, and this year the robots run “missions” on a planetary surface simulated in a game layout which is large enough for four robots to operate simultaneously. During the meet, each team competes in short matches which include collaborating in alliances with other robotics teams. Points are awarded in each match for robot performance, design, accomplishment of mission, and community outreach. Lots of math, engineering, creativity, problem solving, brainstorming, and team-building occurs in FTC.
