The Red Kettle

As Christmas approaches us, we start to notice the extra little things people do to help those who aren’t as fortunate. A big thing we all notice are the Salvation Army volunteers who stand outside Wal-Mart or Walgreens with their Santa hat on, their bell in hand, and that little red kettle.
I never really thought about it much, but these people are amazing! They willingly stand outside in the cold for hours ringing their bell saying “Merry Christmas!” with a smile on their face to every person that walks in or out of the store. I’m sure you can agree with me that giving your money away is a hard thing to do and some days you can even find it to be annoying. Don’t they know I have things I need to buy for myself? I have looked at this charity with a selfish approach myself.
In reality, the Salvation Army uses these red kettles to aid the needy families, seniors, and the homeless, all with the millions of donated dollars we give. The donations go towards dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need, and financial aid for basic needs and seasonal aid. The volunteers give out gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes and the shelters are opened for sit-down dinners. So many blessings are given through our dollars.
Next time you’re in Wal-Mart, or whenever you have a few extra dollars, donate them. You’re going to be spending money inside the store anyways, so why not donate your left over change? Be a blessing.
