Dig It!

Wash brushes away layers of sand.

The 6th grade World History class studies Ancient Israel, a natural opportunity to explore archeological best practices.

Students had to carefully sweep away thick, moist sand and use more delicate tools to uncover a variety of artifacts. Each item had to be carefully sketched in its original location and inventoried.

Hailey documents her artifacts.

Several students had moments of shouting, “What is this?” A common question for archeologists.

Sara is determined to find everything.

Students then inferred what the dig site represented–what happened at that site? The presence of tools, screws, and other items suggested a construction site.

Izzy uses a toothbrush to delicately move sand away from artifacts.
