Secondary students took to the stage for Macabre: Tales from Edgar Allan Poe by Jules Tasca and directed by DCS Fine Arts teacher Mrs. Dodson. The production featured four of Poe’s lesser-known short stories: “William Wilson”, “The Valdemar Case”, “The Imp of the Perverse”, and “The System”. The Theatre Arts class led the way with a variety of middle and high school students among the cast and crew.
The focus question for this production was, “What is mankind without God’s grace?”
The costume design included all actors wearing a dark, decaying design around their eyes while performing the stories that explored various categories of sin such as self-indulgence and self-will. Instead of the traditional curtain call, the cast sang “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” and cleansed their eyes of the decaying makeup.
The production is the most serious one the DCS Theatre Arts has produced in the last few years. It was an interesting journey for the cast to tell the stories and the production crew to design and implement the technical aspects. It dug deep into the heart of sin and the hope of redemption in Christ.
