A Message from Pastor Cantrell

At Decatur Christian School, we believe every student deserves to be known, challenged, and encouraged. For 50 plus years, our community of teachers, families, and students has worked together to create a place where curiosity is welcomed, kindness is expected, and each child is supported in becoming the best version of themselves.

Our classrooms are active and engaging. Our teachers care deeply about their students, and they bring both high standards and genuine warmth to their work. Beyond academics, we focus on character, service, and building the confidence students need to take on whatever comes next.

Families are partners in everything we do. Whether you’re considering joining us or are already part of our community, we hope this site gives you a sense of who we are and what we value.

We would love to meet you. Please explore our website, reach out with questions, or schedule a visit to see Decatur Christian School in action.

Blessings,Pastor Cantrell

Every student deserves to be known, challenged, and encouraged.

Mission Statement

Our Mission

Our mission is to lead students in truth, inspire them to reach their God-given potential, and prepare them to serve Christ and others with excellence.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.”

Psalm 127:1
What We Believe

Statement of Faith

We believe the following to be true for Christian education:
1

Foundation

The inerrant, infallible, and authoritative Word of God is the only foundation.
II Peter 1:19-21
2

Truth

Truth is absolute and rooted in God’s Word, not in philosophical relativism.
II Timothy 3:16; Colossians 2:8
3

Worldview

Jesus Christ is the center of all things, not man, as humanism claims.
Colossians 1:16-17, 2:8
4

Nature of Man

Mankind is sinful and in need of a Savior, not essentially good.
Romans 3:23
5

Objective

The goal of education is Christ-likeness through the work of the Holy Spirit, not self-improvement through knowledge alone.
Ephesians 4:11-13; Galatians 2:20
6

Methodology

Teaching and discipline are guided by the authority of God’s Word.
Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4
7

Agency

The home holds priority over the school in the education of children.
Deuteronomy 6:5-7; Joshua 24:15
8

Dynamic

The Holy Spirit works through the lives of Christian faculty, staff, and volunteers.
Luke 6:40
Since 1973

Our History

1973
Decatur Christian School began in August 1973, as a vision of Grace Baptist Church of Decatur, IL, with the desire to provide an outstanding academic program based upon scriptural truth. Since that significant beginning, Decatur Christian has grown in enrollment, academic excellence, and ministry to the Decatur area community.
1993
In 1993, Glad Tidings Academy, a ministry of Glad Tidings Assembly of God, merged with Decatur Christian School. Following the merger, Decatur Christian became a single entity governed by a dedicated school board committed to serving the greater Decatur area and surrounding communities.
ACSI
Accreditation
Decatur Christian School is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and is recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education as a nonpublic school.
